FC St. Pauli missed the possible liberation against leaders Darmstadt 98 in the 2nd Bundesliga.
On Saturday evening (October 29th, 2022), St. Pauli drew 1-1 against the leaders from Darmstadt at MIllerntor
Frank Ronstadt scored the lead for the championship leader after an hour with a remarkable long-range shot. Lukas Daschner (69th) brought St. Pauli back into play with the equalizer.
Darmstadt (29 points) missed the chance to extend the lead in the table ahead of the chasing duel between Paderborn and Hamburger SV. St. Pauli (15 points) remains dangerously close to the relegation zone with just one win from the past eleven games.
St. Pauli courageous, Darmstadt not like a league leader
St. Pauli was out for the liberation from the start and bravely played forward. Darmstadt initially remained very cautious and did not necessarily appear like a table leader.
Only once in the first 45 minutes did St. Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj get in trouble: An unsuccessful attempt by Betim Fazliji to clear the ball almost ended up in his own net, but the crossbar saved the hosts.
At the other end, Darmstadt keeper Marcel Schuhen prevented St. Pauli, who had Jackson Irvine and Etienne Amenyido on their heels, from taking the lead several times.
Darmstadt efficiently, St. Pauli with morals
The Hessians only broke their reserve after the break, but showed themselves to be extremely efficient: After Amenyido missed another chance for the home side, Ronstadt practically scored in return with a direct shot from a tight angle.
Daschner with the balance – and the chance to win
St. Pauli coped well with the unfortunate deficit at the time, showed morale and finally the necessary calm in the end: Daschner used preparatory work from Johannes Eggestein and scored from the edge of the penalty area to equalize.
Daschner also had the greatest chance of winning in the exciting final phase, but only hit aluminum with his head.
