The participants got to work on the Vateplein in Lo. One baking iron is very modern, while the other looks like it has come straight from a museum.
Bart Seynaeve, participant: “I have the irons from our store in Roeselare and they are 106 years old. My grandfather, my father and I have always baked with them. It is the original recipe of my grandfather who improved it with an uncle who came from America.”
Lo is of course known thanks to Jules Destrooper, who started baking cakes here in 1886. 140 years later, Greta also tried for eternal fame.
Greta Clarysse, participant: “On New Year’s Eve I always bake 1000 cakes for the family, children, friends and acquaintances.”
A walking lobster also appears at the Lukkefeesten. It sprays visitors with sunscreen in just 10 seconds. It is only the pieces that may have a golden brown color. Bart Seynaeve was the winner of the competition.
