1 year after Inter Milan’s record sale: Lukaku comes back from Chelsea

Transfer from Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku is allowed to storm again for Inter Milan in the coming season. The record sale in Nerazzurri history, who switched to Chelsea last year for 113 million euros (also as a historic top purchase), is loaned out for a season and is already topping the transfer statistics of the two clubs. Inter’s club president Steven Zhang confirmed the move in a joint video with Lukaku.

Inter, who gave up their top scorer Lukaku last summer only for the necessary income, are said to have to pay a loan fee of at least 8 million euros, with bonuses of up to 12 million euros, to the Englishmen. In terms of total volume, Lukaku would then be Inter’s most expensive loan player since Nicolò Barella (2019/20), who required the same loan costs, but as part of a more far-reaching deal with a subsequent purchase obligation. For Lukaku, on the other hand, Chelsea Inter apparently gave no option for a permanent commitment.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Lukaku is accepting a 33 percent drop in salary for the change. While he is said to have earned €12m net in London, it will be €8m in Milan. “I hope with all my heart that I will return to Inter, but not at the end of my career, but when I’m still good enough to win more titles,” Lukaku said in an interview back in December. While the Belgian apologized for the statements to Chelsea and supporters, he went on to play well below expectations for a 100m striker and have gone ten Premier League games since the statements.

For expensive Lukaku loan: Do Inter have to sell Skriniar?

In view of Lukaku’s expensive loan, the question of financing arises at Inter, which must end the transfer phase in the black. Most recently, everything pointed to the sale of Milan Skriniar (27), although according to TM expert Jatin Dietl, he does not want to change at all.

A sale of Skriniar, the team’s most valuable centre-back, would give Inter financial leeway this summer, as transfer proceeds flow fully into the accounts for the full year, while expenses, such as the €23.6m for Joaquín Correa (27) or the 25 million to 30 million euros for Bremer, calculated pro rata over the contract period. Correa signed until 2025 and will consequently have a book value of around €7.9m in the P&L for 2022/23.

Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta recently told Radio Rai: “In my opinion it’s more difficult to replace a striker than a defender in this market. That’s the area where we’re forced to act.” With Lukaku, Inter now have one of their most successful clippers, after goals in one season, back.
