Coach debate at the “Club”
Only one win from the last seven games, in the table passed up to the relegation place 16: At 1. FC Nürnberg after the derby defeat against Greuther Fürth and before the upcoming DFB Cup round of 16 against Fortuna Düsseldorf, the mood is at its lowest point. While the calls for a possible replacement of coach Markus Weinzierl are getting louder in the environment of the “club”, sports director Dieter Hecking commented on the current situation at the Valznerweiher.
There are still enough games to get the team back on track and to free themselves from the bottom of the table, Weinzierl tried to get a positive view on Saturday evening after the local rivals went bankrupt on the “Sky” microphone. The 48-year-old took over Nuremberg from his predecessor Robert Klauß in 14th place at the beginning of October last year and started with two wins from the first three competitive games – but since then only one more has followed, Weinzierl has averaged 1.2 from ten games to date Counter. Not enough for some FCN supporters, so the trainer’s personality is also hotly debated in the TM community.

“Weinzierl sits down in the press conference afterwards and talks about working to find better solutions going forward. Well, I feel like I’m being ripped off when I have weeks to prepare for it and that was also mentioned as a goal beforehand. What the hell were they doing there? I’m not one who demands evictions right away, but the sum of the long preparation and the last two games unfortunately doesn’t allow me any other alternative,” writes TM user “Huelsi”, for example. Even user “casbau” apparently does not see a man for the future in Weinzierl: “I expect Weinzierl’s timely dismissal. I’m certainly not one to let negativity out all the time, but I never seem to have really gotten along with the current coach. His apparent lack of emotion was there from the start, somehow he seems completely uninvolved.”
Nuremberg’s sports director Dieter Hecking said the day after the Fürth bankruptcy in an interview with the “Picture“ in detail on Weinzierl’s personnel – and neither gave the trainer offensive support nor suggested a possible separation. “It’s an external discussion that always comes up when the results don’t match. But I don’t take part in that. The important thing is that we address things internally and we discuss them with the coach. Finally, Markus draws the conclusions with his coaching staff from what he sees. That’s how it should be. In the end we all know that the results are not satisfactory for us and the coach,” said the 58-year-old when asked about the alleged coaching debate.

Nuremberg derby bankruptcy in Fürth – Hecking announces internal meeting
Hecking attested to the team’s lack of calm, “instead we hit these long, sometimes uncontrolled balls. But that has been a common thread for a long time.” In terms of football, he “wished for a lot more courage in the first half because I am convinced that our team is capable of it. We will discuss internally why we only acted braver in the second half,” analyzed the former FCN coach (2009 to 2012) and continued: “We have individual players who are not in the condition we like them to be in had. Of course that weighs heavily. The other thing is that we focused on fitness in preparation and now we have to keep working on football. The coach and his team will convey what is the decisive point to the team.”
On the way back to the road to success, Weinzierl is now also in demand, emphasized the native of Castrop-Rauxeler: “In addition to the footballing aspects already mentioned, we now have to see who can do justice to the situation mentally. That is the job of the coaching staff in conjunction with Olaf Rebbe and myself. It is important to filter out which players can do this, tackle this task and bring the mental state with them. That’s part of the coaching job and Markus has often experienced situations like this in his career. He will draw the right conclusions.”
With regard to the DFB Cup game against Fortuna, Hecking also held the players responsible: “The cup game is a huge opportunity for us and the team should see it that way.”
