1. FC Köln wants to loan Florian Dietz out in the winter – RW Essen is interested

Schmitz’s future is open

Cologne’s long-injured attacker Florian Dietz only has a 26-minute appearance last weekend against Mainz 05 in the current season. According to information from the TV channel “Sky”, the Bundesliga club is considering a loan for the 25-year-old, whose contract in the cathedral city runs until 2025.

Dietz could create space for a new offensive force at FC in the winter and gain match practice elsewhere, loose interest in a transfer has already been signaled by third division club Rot-Weiss Essen, tweeted reporter Marlon Irlbacher. Dietz was back on the pitch against Mainz in the Bundesliga for the first time since he tore his cruciate ligament in October 2022. “He did well when he came in,” said coach Steffen Baumgart afterwards. The right-footer, who is considered to be flexible in attack, had previously scored four goals and prepared two more in six games for the second team in the Regionalliga West. In total, Dietz’s record includes three goals in 19 competitive appearances for the professionals.

With a view to winter reinforcements, Essen’s coach Christoph Dabrowski recently explained in the Transfermarkt interview that he primarily saw a possible need for the offensive flanks: “We don’t have this profile that often in the squad. “With a view to our system, it could make sense to have one or two alternatives there and to be able to react adequately in certain situations or in the event of possible failures,” said the 45-year-old (on the RWE story).

1. FC Köln: Benno Schmitz’s future open

The future of right-back Benno Schmitz at Cologne also remains open. The 29-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season; the defender lost his regular place under Baumgart during the first half of the season. “SkyAccording to Baumgart, he would like to extend the Munich native’s working paper beyond the summer, while sports director Christian Keller wants to postpone the discussion about an extension because he is not completely convinced of Schmitz’s qualities.

The professional, who trained at FC Bayern, moved from RB Leipzig to FC in 2018 for a fee of 200,000 euros and has since played 127 games (11 scorers) for the first team. His market value was reduced by one million as part of Transfermarkt’s latest Bundesliga update.
