1. FC Köln is practically saved with a six-point lead and a clearly better goal difference compared to VfL Wolfsburg and FC St. Pauli. However, it remains to be seen whether René Wagner will be on the sidelines for the Bundesliga club beyond the current season.
As “Bild” and “kicker” reported on Monday, Wagner has to continue to gather arguments for 1. FC Köln in the remaining games against 1. FC Heidenheim (Sunday, 5:30 p.m.) and against FC Bayern (May 16).
After Lukas Kwasniok left in mid-March, the 37-year-old was promoted from assistant to interim coach until the end of the season.
“Sky” recently reported that the promoted team would plan long-term with Wagner if they were to stay in the league.
1. FC Köln practically saved – what will happen to Wagner?
1. FC Cologne is six points clear of the relegation zone in the Bundesliga after 32 match days. The Rhinelanders have a goal difference of -8, VfL Wolfsburg (-25) and FC St. Pauli (-28) are significantly worse off. The Effzeh could only crash theoretically.
Wagner has “good cards, but it won’t be a sure-fire success despite the goal he has achieved,” is how the “Express” classifies the open coaching question at 1. FC Köln.
“We want to achieve our goals, then we sit down, draw a line under it and evaluate the season calmly. Then of course we will talk to René about the issues,” Cologne’s sports director Thomas Kessler told Sky after the recent 2-2 draw at Union Berlin on Saturday.
Under Wagner, 1. FC Köln has so far won one win and three draws. On the other hand there is a defeat.
In the away game at 1. FC Union Berlin, the Domstadt team gave up a temporary 2-0 lead in the final phase. The aim is to win the upcoming home game against 1. FC Heidenheim before heading to Munich.
