The Berlin Volleys were very disappointing on the second day of the intermediate round in the Volleyball Bundesliga.
In the away game at SVG Lüneburg, the German champions deservedly lost 0:3 (21:25, 24:26, 21:25) in front of 2400 spectators on Saturday evening. If their competitor VfB Friedrichshafen wins their home game against Düren on Sunday, they will replace the Berliners at the top of the table.
The BR Volleys didn’t exert the usual pressure with their serve in Lüneburg’s LKH-Arena from the start. Although Marek Sotola and Timonthee Carle temporarily took a 12:10 lead in the first set, the hosts, unimpressed by this, immediately struck back. At times, the Lüneburg team even extended their lead to five points (21:16).
In a largely balanced second round, the Berliners gained a set ball at 24:23, but were unable to use it. An attack by Marek Sotola, which went wide, finally brought the decision to 26:24 for Lüneburg. The guests also lacked the necessary penetrating power in some other promising situations after longer rallies.
The BR Volleys didn’t find a clear line against a strong Lüneburg team in the third section either. Substituting ex-Lüneburg player Cody Kessel did not help the team in the long term either. The hosts put their stamp on the game over the full distance.
