The disappointment was written on the players of RB Leipzig. The team of coach Marco Rose did not go beyond a 2: 2 (1: 2) against the relegation threatened 1. FC Heidenheim on Sunday afternoon (23.02.2025).

The Saxons were able to catch up an early 0: 2, but this draw is clearly too little for the great ambitions of the club. RBL continues to run after the music in the fight for the Champions League places.

But even the Heidemheimers should not be fully satisfied with this end result after a clear tour, in the relegation battle the team of coach Frank Schmidt finally needs every point. The FCH currently occupies relegation place 16 in the table.

“We not only fought the point somehow, but also played really well in the first half”said Schmidt in the sports show interview. “We have the big goal of having this relegation place in mid -May.”

Honsak with a tough shot

The Heidenheimers made an almost perfect start. Attacker Mathias Honsak scored 1-0 (7th) with a brilliant direct acceptance from 18 meters in the morning, which should play a role in the selection of the goal of the month of February of the sports show.

And just six minutes later, the Schmidt team was able to cheer again. Leipzig captain Willi Orban brought attacker Marvin Pieringer in the penalty area, referee Martin Petersen decided on a penalty. Pieringer, who executed himself, did not take this opportunity and turned ice cold to 2: 0 (13th).

Leipzig is missing the ideas

The Leipziger looked shocked and were lucky that Honsak was not enough pressure on the ball from the baseline after a submission of Sirlord Conteh and RBL goalkeeper Peter Gulascsi could parry. But: Above all, the Rose team did not get a grip on the agile and playful honsak.

The Saxons lacked the ideas in front of the opposing goal for a long time. They hardly earned any possibilities, also because Heidenheim went to work highly concentrated and vigorous and many attempts to attack the Leipziger already destroyed in the beginning.

Openda with a tentative attempt and a hit

After 33 minutes, Leipzig-Offensivmann Lois Openda had the first way of mentioning his shot from an acute angle goalkeeper Kevin Müller quickly with his foot. Otherwise, Heidenheim mainly touched concrete and defended deeply with all players in their own half, which made it difficult for the RBL players.

But immediately before the half -time whistle it was again Openda who was aimed more precisely this time. According to the fine shelf of storm colleague Benjamin Sesko, the 25-year-old scored a little surprisingly to the 1-2 connection (45.+2).

Heidenheim’s Müller with glossy parades

As soon as the second half had started, it was again Openda who had the equalizer on her foot. The attacker ran alone for Müller, but the goalkeeper threw himself in front of the ball and was able to ward off.

The Leipziger came out of the cabin with significantly more swing. Two minutes later, Ridle Baku tried a flat Schlenzer, but Müller parried again quickly.

Siersleben causes penalty

A clumsy action by defender Tim Siersleben when he rammed Openda the elbow in the Heidenheim penalty area in his neck, the Leipziger brought back into play. Sesco converted the due penalty to 2-2 equalization (64th).

The Leipzigers tried to keep the pace up, but the Heidemheimers did not resign but fought against it with full strength. It was a struggle for wear in which the guests did everything they could to keep at least one point – which in the end should succeed with happiness and skill.
