As of: February 2, 2024 11:10 p.m

Borussia Dortmund dropped points in the fight for the Champions League places in the game against 1. FC Heidenheim.

After the 0-0 draw on Friday evening (02/02/2024) at 1. FC Heidenheim, BVB is still fourth in the table, but RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt now have the opportunity to shorten the gap. Dortmund had previously won three games in a row. Heidenheim remains in midfield and is unbeaten in seven games.

“With the performance we showed today, we didn’t deserve more than one point”said BVB coach Edin Terzic on DAZN. “We were too complicated, didn’t play cleanly and had problems with the pitch.”

Heidenheim misses the chance to take the lead, Malen is just offside

Without winter newcomer Jadon Sancho, who had to sit out due to muscular problems, and Marco Reus, Julian Brandt and Gregor Kobel, who were missing due to illness, Dortmund had a difficult time at the beginning. Heidenheim had two good chances. In the 14th minute, Salih Özcan played the ball into the foot of Heidenheim’s Tim Kleindienst. Kleindienst had the almost empty goal in front of him from 14 meters – and aimed just wide.

“We had 100%, but that might not be enough.”said Heidenheim’s coach Frank Schmidt. Kleindienst admitted contritely: “It was harder to shoot past than into the goal. It’s horrible, it just hurts.” Just four minutes later, Heidenheim was close again: after a cross from the left, Kleindienst headed past the goal.

Dortmund didn’t punish that. After a mistake by Heidenheim in building up the game, BVB countered, Donyell Malen outplayed Heidenheim’s goalkeeper Kevin Müller and sank the ball into the goal – but the video assistant noticed that Malen was in a close offside position when Thomas Meunier passed the pass (26th).

Heidenheim misses the victory in stoppage time

There were few chances to score for a long time in the second half, and it wasn’t until the 77th minute that Niclas Füllkrug narrowly missed out on taking the lead for BVB. Nico Schlotterbeck failed because of Heidenheim’s goalkeeper Müller (79′).

But Heidenheim had the great chance to win: Kevin Sessa finished after a cross from the right in the six-yard box, but headed past the far corner. Stefan Schimmer just missed the ball as it flew out of the goal (90+1). “If he does that, we can say: He deserves three points. So the one point is deserved”said Schmidt.

Again protests against Investor entry in the DFL

Many Dortmund fans protested again against the possible entry of investors into the DFL. In addition to the investor entry itself, the fan alliance criticizes the decision-making process. Members were hardly involved. Many organized fan scenes are calling for a new vote with more transparency.
