Live: Sparta – FC Volendam 1-1
Follow the NH Sport radio broadcast via the stream below:
Lushendry Martes steps on Robert Mühren’s foot. Referee Martin van den Kerkhof gives a penalty, but is called aside by VAR Joey Kooij. There will be no penalty….
Volendam does very well there. The ball is given away clumsily. Nökkvi Thórisson wastes the opportunity. Dave Kwakman and Oehlers leave. Robert Mühren and Alex Plat make an appearance.
What a start straight from FC Volendam. The eel farmers immediately get a great opportunity through Aurelio Oehlers. The ball goes out of the goal via the underside of the crossbar.
Yannick Leliendal has left for Aaron Meijers, the former Spartan.
Shinsuke Mito has the ball from close range before tapping it in. Fortunately for Volendam, Roy Steur can save this time.
A little later the Japanese breaks through. Sturgeon has a fantastic rescue. The Volendammer keeps his team going in this phase. Rick Kruys’ team is longing for some peace and quiet.
Özan Kökcü whips a free kick over the wall, but straight into the hands of goalkeeper Filip Bednarek. That is once again a great opportunity for Volendam.
There is Sparta’s equalizer. This time goalkeeper Roy Steur cannot turn after a shot by Ayoni Santos. It’s 1-1.
A hard cross from Precious Ugwu is just cleared from the goal mouth. Shame.
On the other hand, Volendam is doing very well. From a cross from Mitchell van Bergen, Shunsuke Mito emerges at the far post. The Japanese taps just wide. Van Bergen also squandered an opportunity moments later.
Brandley Kuwas breaks the ban for FC Volendam. He taps in a cross from the right from Aurelio Oehlers. It’s 0-1 for Volendam.
Will FC Volendam also qualify for the last eight of the KNVB Cup? The ball rolls in Rotterdam.
Rick Kruys’ men are in the eighth finals of the KNVB Cup for the first time since 2020/21. PSV was too strong at the time with 2-0. The last quarter-final was in 2016/17 against Sparta. The Rotterdam team defeated Volendam on penalties.
The eel farmers’ best performance was reaching the finals in 1994/95 and 1957/58. In both cases there was a loss.
John Heitinga has found a new club, just under two months after his dismissal from Ajax. Heitinga will start working as assistant coach of Tottenham Hotspur. The former coach of the Amsterdam team will deal with the defenders.
Heitinga was fired from Ajax in November after a bad start to the season. Before that, the former defender was an assistant in England at Liverpool and West Ham United. Heitinga won the championship at Liverpool last season under coach Arne Slot.
