Willem and Marnix of Ciao Lucifer process their demons in cheerful pop songs

Marnix and Willem have known each other since high school. They were already making music at that time. “We were bored and then we started making music. Funk music, but also heavy metal,” says Marnix. “But it was already danceable then, and it has always been that way,” Willem adds.

Ciao Lucifer consists of two band members, yet they sound like a real band live. “We have some technical tricks for that,” Marnix explains. “By making an adjustment to my guitar, I can play bass and guitar at the same time.” Willem does the same behind his drum kit. He conjures up a palette of sounds from his electronic kazoo.

Ciao Lucifer makes cheerful indie pop, but the boys also try to convey a serious message in their songs. “It all sounds good, but there is a dark underlayer that is quite abrasive,” says Willem.

Marnix agrees. “The lyrics are about the situation in the world, which is of course quite worrying with climate change and wars. But they are also about personal suffering such as heartbreak. It is actually accepting and then saying goodbye to the demons, hence Ciao Lucifer.”
