Better visited club football for women in England than in Spain
16.09 hours: Football for women is best visited in Europe in England. The competitions in the Women’s Super League (WSL) attract considerably more fans than duels in countries such as Germany, Spain or Italy. That is partly the effect of the EC Football Championships won by England in 2022 in his own country, says sports marketing expert Marcel Blijlevens based on investigations.
On Sunday, title defender England and world champion Spain in Basel play the final of the European Football Championship. With 72 players at the European Championship, the English WSL is much better represented than the Italian league (51 players), the German Bundesliga (47) and the Spanish League (38).
In 2011, the English Football Association focused on the growth of women’s club football by obliging or developing the clubs from the Premier League and the Championship. The teams were given strict license requirements, such as professional contracts, medical guidance and youth training.
From 2018, all WSL clubs were obliged to operate fully professionally. The FA closed millions of deals with broadcasters, which led to more visibility and income. As a result, the WSL is considered the most visited competition in Europe. Competitions in the WSL were visited on average by 6379 spectators in the 2024/2025 season. In Germany (2750 visitors), Spain (1698) and France (1550), those numbers were considerably lower.
The Dutch national coach Sarina Wiegman will be on Sunday with England for the second time in a row in the final of the European Championship. Wiegman lost the World Cup final in Australia of Spain in 2023 with England.
