What do the numbers say? FC Volendam rightfully wins the ‘Back and forth’

With a win over FC Den Bosch, promotion to the Eredivisie is a fact for FC Volendam. For The Back and Forth beckons for the tenth time in history the step to the highest level. That would mean a new record in Dutch professional football.

FC Den Bosch:
To be promoted on Friday evening, Volendam must beat FC Den Bosch. In case of loss of points, the party will be postponed. Competitor ADO Den Haag only plays on Sunday. However, Volendam can count on a good series in Den Bosch. Of the last 10 matches, it won 6 times in De Vliert and drew 3 times. Last season, Volendam won 5-1 in Den Bosch thanks to goals from Ibrahim El Kadiri, Samuele Mulattieri, Zakaria El Azzouzi, Micky van de Ven and Derry John Murkin.

Back and forth:
FC Volendam was promoted to the Eredivisie 9 times before. In 7 cases this happened as champion of the first division and in 2 cases via the play-offs. If Volendam is promoted, it is the most often promoted to the Eredivisie of all clubs in the Netherlands. De Graafschap is now also on 9 promotions. The last time Volendam was promoted was in 2008. Then Volendam became champion on the last day of play, visiting ADO Den Haag.

Number 2:
Only in the 1982-1983 season did Volendam directly promote to the Eredivisie as number two in the first division. Led by trainer Fritz Korbach, Volendam finished second behind DS’79, later FC Dordrecht. Frank Kramer became the club’s top scorer that season with 14 goals. Frans Hoek and Johan Steur, among others, were part of that team.

Boy Deul:
Of the current selection, Boy Deul is the only player who has already experienced a promotion to the Eredivisie with FC Volendam. The 33-year-old midfielder, who will leave on a free transfer after this season, was already there in the 2007/2008 season. The then 20-year-old Deul played a major role in Stanley Menzo’s championship team. Deul played 34 games and scored 12 goals.

April 22nd:
The date April 22 is not particularly in favor of FC Volendam. 8 times before Volendam played matches in the first division on that date. They only won once (3-1 against Sparta in 2011). No less than 5 times a match ended in a draw and 2 matches were lost. The last time Volendam played on April 22 was in 2019, when the team lost 3-1 to Jong FC Utrecht.
