Werder beats newcomers – and makes a leap

Due to a lot of pyrotechnics, there was little to see in Hamburg for a long time. But when the fog cleared, the guests from the Weser triumphed.

SV Werder Bremen has improved its record abroad with impressive efficiency. In the 2-0 (1-0) win at newly promoted FC St. Pauli, Bremen weren’t necessarily the better team, but they still achieved their fifth away win of the season in the Bundesliga. Due to the massive use of pyrotechnics by the fans, the game was interrupted for almost ten minutes.

Derrick Köhn (24th) and Marvin Ducksch (56th) took advantage of two of the few chances. With 16 points, coach Ole Werner’s team is now the second best team away from home. Bremen are in seventh place in the table. Werder started the matchday in tenth place. Tomorrow, Sunday, BVB and VfB Stuttgart can still overtake.

The home record is causing problems for the Hamburg team, who are at least equally capable. With one win and two draws at Millerntor, they have already had four defeats and are 15th in the table. further close to the danger zone.

The 29,546 spectators in the sold-out stadium experienced an uneasy start to the game. Werder had a more mature playing system, but the hosts were secure at the back for a long time. However, FC St. Pauli only managed a little forward.

A shot from ex-Bremen player Johannes Eggestein (19th) was the only notable goal scene on both sides. But Eggestein failed because of Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.

With the first successful combination and the first shot on goal, the guests took the lead. After a pass from Jens Stage, Köhn gave St. Pauli’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj no chance with his shot from almost 19 meters and put his team in the lead with his second goal of the season.

The goal conceded had an impact on FC St. Pauli. During this time, Bremen were clearly predominant. But there were still no great opportunities. It wasn’t until about ten minutes after falling behind that Hamburg found their way back into the game with their running quality.

There was a lot going on, especially on Oladapo Afolayan’s left side. At halftime, FC St. Pauli had six shots on goal and Werder had two. But there was hardly anything compelling to be seen from the people of Hamburg.

The game had to be interrupted at the beginning of the second half. The stadium was covered in thick smoke after the pyrotechnics from both fan camps were used. Referee Robert Hartmann sent both teams back to the dressing rooms for the time being. The game only resumed after almost ten minutes.

After the sequel, the game finally took off. This was mainly due to FC St. Pauli, who now became bolder. Danel Sinani narrowly missed the ball (49′), Eggestein’s shot was too central (54′).

In the middle of this period of pressure for the Kiezkickers, Werder struck again out of nowhere. Werder goalkeeper Zetterer’s tee shot landed at Ducksch, who caught St. Pauli’s defender off guard. Free in front of the goal, the center forward scored his fourth goal of the season past Vasilj.

The second goal was a wake-up call for St. Pauli. The home team tried hard, but struggled against Bremen’s defense. A long-range shot from Carlo Boukhalfa was the only chance worth mentioning, which Zetterer parried confidently (69′).

There was little to see from Werder offensively. The deep-lying guests preferred to manage their lead and brought another defender onto the pitch. However, St. Pauli also ran out of steam in the final phase. The last big chance remained for the guests. Werder’s Oliver Burke was denied by Vasilj in the penalty area (90’+1′).
