VAR-Aus for referee boss not an option

For the German head of referee Lutz Michael Fröhlich, the abolition of video evidence, as recently demanded by some club officials and professionals, is not an option.

“Of course you can continue to play football without VAR,” said the refereeing director of the German Football Association (DFB) at “kicker meets DAZN”: “But that’s not realistic in the overall context, and I don’t think it makes sense either.”

According to Fröhlich, the criticism of the video evidence is exaggerated. “We’re talking about the things that aren’t going well, that’s concentrated. The things that went well and what is caused by it are being completely ignored at the moment,” said the 65-year-old: “It’s just a Negative hype, also due to the course of the season. You have to take countermeasures.”

In principle, Fröhlich sees the criticism of the referee’s performance before the World Cup break as at least partially justified: “The half-year was not entirely satisfactory for everyone involved.”
