USA: Not sure about background of dam destruction

NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – The USA has no reliable information about the background to the destruction of the Kachowka Dam in southern Ukraine – but an American UN representative considers sabotage by Kiev to be unlikely. “Why would Ukraine do something like this to its own territory and its own people, flooding its country and forcing tens of thousands to flee their homes? It just doesn’t make sense,” Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood said Tuesday before an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York. Wood said he hopes to have more information on the apparent attack on the dam in a few days.

Ukraine accuses Russia of blowing up the dam, the destruction of which caused major flooding. Moscow claims that Ukrainian troops shelled the facility. According to the UN, at least 16,000 people in the region have been made homeless by the floods./scb/DP/men
