US striker Weah on goal in front of father George: “A dream come true”

In a draw against Wales

Despite the late Welsh equalizer on Monday night, a dream came true for US striker Timothy Weah – and the famous father was able to celebrate in the stands. “It’s a dream come true for every attacker and every player who scores at a World Cup,” said the 22-year-old striker after his goal that gave the USA a 1-1 (1-0) lead against Wales in the group game the World Cup in Qatar.

In the 36th minute, Weah, the son of former world footballer and current President of Liberia, George Weah, made it 1-0 for the Americans. “He was here tonight with my mother and my uncle,” Weah said after scoring the first World Cup goal of his career. Other family members were also there. Gareth Bale’s late 1-1 penalty (82′) prevented the LOSC Lille attacker from winning the match. Lille signed Weah in 2019 for €10m from PSG, who had coached him since 2014.

Weah’s father, a striker for Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan in the 1990s, has never appeared at the World Cup as Liberia have never reached a finals. At least that and even a goal at a World Cup has his son born in New York ahead of the former star player.

The 2018 World Cup in Russia was missed by the US selection, this time led in Qatar by former Leipzig player Tyler Adams as captain. On their return to the international stage with 25 World Cup debuts, the Americans looked more agile and lively than their opponents against Wales, but rarely found gaps in the British five-man chain. Giovanni Reyna from Borussia Dortmund hoped in vain to get a chance as a substitute.
