The Toten Hosen are 40 years old – for this reason, the ARD sheds light on a very special episode in the band life of Campino & Co. with a documentary now legendary concert into the GDR.
In the early 1980s, the Stasi band played a terrific trick: they managed to get across the border unnoticed and play a secret concert in a church — together with the East Berlin band Planlos. The fact that this was successful is also due to the music manager Mark Reeder, who played a major part in preparing the coup (and gave the trousers, which arrived in the garish tour bus, a more staid, less conspicuous look so as not to attract attention when crossing the border). “Away game: Die Toten Hosen in Ost-Berlin” is a German contemporary document that has long been of interest not only to fans of the pants.
Campino himself was enthusiastic at the film’s premiere at the end of March 2022. “The film is a very good reminder of why we exist in the first place. I can’t imagine a better birthday present,” he is quoted as saying by RND. The guest performance in the east was much more than just another trouser concert — rather, Campino, Kuddel, Breiti, Andi and Trini showed their solidarity with East punks. Thus, “Away game: Die Toten Hosen in Ost-Berlin” should not only be understood as a Toten Hosen documentary, but also as a tribute to Planlos. “Through this film project, you can see what brilliant guys these haphazard guys were,” explained Campino, who was also impressed that the band never let themselves be corrupted. “Against you, we’re really just a children’s birthday party,” said the singer in the direction of his colleagues from the East.
