With two overtime Vincent Cassel and Reda Katebthe film addresses autisma very serious social issue, telling it without filters and pathetisms, but above all without forgetting the irony.
A series of ingredients that have become the trademark of the couple of French filmmakers.
The Specials – Out of the ordinary: the plot
Malik (Kateb) and Bruno (Cassel) are two Parisian friends at the head of two non-profit associations that assist, thanks to the help of unskilled volunteers, autistic children and teens.
Malik is a Muslim and has a daughter, while Bruno is a Jew so busy with work that he can’t spend an evening with a woman without his work getting in the way.
But they have social services on their heelswho investigate the “legality” of their work due to the use of unskilled personnel. Even if the patients – young people coming mainly from difficult neighborhoods and with different problems – they are followed to perfection. Among the many, the stories of Joseph and Valentin, the latter forced to wear a protective boxing helmet why exerts violence on himself.
But, in fact, despite this Malik and Bruno they are forced to endure a tense battle for the survival of associations.
The “humanistic” cinema of Olivier Nakache and Èric Toledano
To manage to mix comedy and drama with a political and social message disruptive is not everyone’s undertaking. However, the pairing of French authors has been successful for years now. By proposing an attentive and sensitive cinema who treats with kindness delicate topics and of absolute urgency.
This is no exception The Specials – Out of the ordinary, focused on autism and institutional deafness. A work in the wake of the filmography of the couple of directors, released from emotional blackmail where it is easy to make use of it, that is, on the social invisibility theme of some categories.
The film is the result of more than twenty years of workstarted when the two directors meet Stéphane Benhamouwhile working as supervisors at a summer camp. Stéphane is the founder of the association “Le silence des justes” specialized inreception and integration of children and adolescents with autismand in the film its essence is contained in the character played by Vincent Cassel.
Olivier Nakache and Èric Toledano think of a documentarybut after other meetings with Benhamou they decide instead for a fictional tale that is still the most balanced possible. A film in which the reality of autism and fantasy are carefully dosed. And in fact the two characters from scratch of Malik and Bruno, played to perfection by Reda Kateb and Vincent Cassel manage to blend thanks to a spontaneous script full of humanity.
The result is a ‘all-male male friendship that moves, entertains and makes you think. Just like in Almost friends. Their cinema does not change the world, but it certainly can help shed light on the critical issues of contemporary society.
