Telstar has secured a place in the second round of the KNVB Cup thanks to a victory over Royal HFC. Mike Snoei’s team won the regional derby 0-1 on a visit to Haarlem thanks to a goal by Christos Giousis.
Telstar trainer Mike Snoei fought Kon. HFC only made one change compared to the handsome 2-1 win over Roda JC. Mihkel Ainsalu started in midfield at the expense of Tom Overtoom.
In the first half hour there was relatively little to do for the spectators at Sportpark Spanjaardslaan. In the 31st minute Telstar took the lead out of nowhere. A nice combination on the left was finally completed by Christos Giousis. The Greek attacker shot the ball just out of reach of Kon. HFC goalkeeper Mitchel Michaelis on the ropes.
Few chances
The home team hardly had any chances and just before half time Telstar captain Glynor Plet had the perfect chance to double the score. However, the experienced striker did not have his sights set yet and came across Michaelis. Both teams therefore went to the locker room before halftime with a 0-1 lead for the visitors from Velsen-Zuid.

In the second act, Koninklijk HFC was again unable to come up with opportunities and Telstar was also not in the power to hurt the neighbor from Haarlem again. Ten minutes before the end, Gertjan Tamerus’ team got a big chance from a corner. Jim Hulleman suddenly got the ball at his feet, but the captain of Kon. HFC fired from close range.
Final Offensive
Hulleman’s attempt turned out to be the starting shot of the Haarlem team’s final offensive. The home team was emphatically looking for the equalizer, but despite a number of perilous moments in front of Ronald Koeman Jr.’s goal, it remained a narrow victory for Telstar.
With the win, Telstar advances to the next round of the national cup tournament. The draw for the second round of the KNVB Cup is this Friday at 11 p.m.
