After there was unrest at VfB Stuttgart in the last few days because CEO Alexander Wehrle presented a competence trio without consulting Sven Mislintat, the waves have now calmed down. The sporting director now even beckons a promotion in the course of a possible contract extension.
Sven Mislintat has been sporting director of VfB Stuttgart since mid-April 2019. Because he did his job so well, the contract of the sports scientist and trained football teacher, who had previously worked at Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal FC, was extended at the Swabian club at the end of 2020 until summer 2023. Since the date just mentioned is now approaching, talks are now to be held about a further extension of the contract. The schedule for this includes November for negotiations.
“There is no football there, we can sit down, go through everything and find a result relatively quickly,” Mislintat said in the “kicker”.
It is quite possible that the 49-year-old will even get a new title. The idea of raising Mislintat to the position of sports director is in the air, as the previous sports director himself revealed. That was “part of the talks,” he said.
Mislintat is “in the mood” for VfB Stuttgart
So far Mislintat didn’t even want this title. After the installation of Philipp Lahm and Sami Khedira as advisors to the board and Christian Gentner as head of the licensed players department starting in January 2023, the situation has apparently changed.
This time “that could be a solution,” Mislintat admitted. The ascent to the new title is not inevitable.
“I don’t care if it’s a sports director or a sports director. It just has to fit,” said the sports director and added: “I’m fine with the extension as sports director if everything fits together and the talks end well.”
“Sven wants to work with all three,” said Wehrle recently, Mislintat confirmed this to the “kicker”.
