There was no winner on the 7th match day of the 2nd Bundesliga between SV Sandhausen and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The two goalkeepers played a big part in that.
SV Sandhausen and 1. FC Kaiserlautern drew 0-0 on Sunday (September 4th, 2022). In an uneventful second division game, the SVS showed a strong fighting performance, but could not convert their superiority into goals. The Sandhäuser failed in the first half to goalkeeper Andreas Luthe, who was the best man at FCK. In the second half, SVS keeper Patrick Drewes excelled in a few situations.
Due to the draw, FCK (12 points) missed the connection to the top places. SV Sandhausen now have seven points and remain in the bottom half of the table after a fourth consecutive game without a win.
Three new players at Sandhausen, FCK with one change
SVS coach Alois Schwartz made three changes to the starting XI after the 1-0 defeat in Kiel. Philipp Ochs, Matej Pulkrab and Merveille Papela replaced Erik Zenga, Marcel Ritzmaier and Ahmed Kutucu.
Coach colleague Dirk Schuster also changed his team. Julian Niehues was allowed to play from the start, Kenny-Prince Redondo had to give way for him wild 4:4 draw against Magdeburg played from the start. Defender Hendrick Zuck, who had returned to the squad after being suspended from red, also initially took a seat on the bench.
Sandhausen caught better initial phase
Above 6,000 FCK fans who traveled with us made the away game in the Hardtwald stadium feel like a home game for the Red Devils. In the first half hour, however, they saw hosts unimpressed by the large crowd. The SVS had more of the game and dared to approach the goal with Janik Bachmann. After seven minutes, however, the former Lauterer’s header after a cross from Alexander Esswein clearly went wide of the FCK goal.
FCK keeper Andreas Luthe had to intervene for the first time in the 13th minute: Ochs brought the ball perfectly to Pulkrab’s head, who aimed for the right corner. But Luthe reacted strongly. A similar picture in the 20th minute: Esswein marched through the Lauterer back team, took a dry shot from 20 meters, but failed again at Luthe. Daniel Kinsombi then put the subsequent shot wide of the goal on the right.
FCK without countable in the offensive
There was little from the Palatinate in the first 30 minutes. Sandhausen disrupted FCK’s build-up game early on and took so much speed out of the Lauterer game, which only appeared in front of the Sandhäuser goal through standard situations, but weren’t really dangerous either. And since the SVS didn’t do anything with its superiority either, the goalless draw went into the break.
Hercher with the first FCK shot on goal
Both teams started the second half without any personnel changes, but FCK showed more assertiveness on the offensive. Philipp Hercher tried a turning shot from eight yards out, but sent the ball wide of the far post (49′). After that, the Palatinate continued to try, but rarely managed to finish an attack with concentration.
Drewes holds point for Sandhausen
FCK coach Schuster reacted for the first time in the 70th minute and brought on a fresh man for the offensive in Redondo. For Lautern, the final offensive seemed to be heralded. The game was increasingly shifted in front of the SVS goal. Goalkeeper Patrick Drewes had to clear against Marlon Ritter (73′) and Boyd (77′) and kept it 0-0.
FCK now against Darmstadt, Sandhausen near St. Pauli
Both teams have to play again next Sunday (September 11, 1:30 p.m.). 1. FC Kaiserslautern welcomes Darmstadt 98 on matchday 8 of the 2nd Bundesliga. SVS travels to Hamburg to FC St. Pauli.
