Shiffrin undergoes “unexpected” surgery

Ski star Mikaela Shiffrin has had to undergo an “unexpected” operation. The American announced this on Instagram on Saturday. The procedure was caused by complications during her recovery from her abdominal injury, which she sustained in her fall at the home race in Killington at the end of November.

The operation took place on Thursday evening, Shiffrin reported. The 29-year-old said she felt uncomfortable and explained: “It turned out that I had a small cavity that was deeper than the wound tract, was filled with old hematomas and didn’t drain properly.”

Shiffrin added that she would get in touch again if there was anything new. A few days after the fall, she said she would have to take a break, probably lasting several weeks. When she can return to the World Cup is more open than ever.
