Sabrina Carpenter is a guest on the December 12th episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. During the interview she talks about her first meeting with her musical role model Paul McCartney.
In love with Paul McCartney
The 25-year-old beamed as she entered the “Late Show” studio and was surprised by host Stephen Colbert with an espresso martini – to go with her song “Espresso”. The two joke back and forth, Colbert congratulates the aspiring singer on her six Grammy nominations, Carpenter beams and asserts how surreal it all is for her.
Colbert finally asks whether it is true that the Beatles in particular inspired the singer-songwriter to write her own songs. “When I was very young, my father played me ‘Rocky Racoon’ for the first time,” Carpenter begins, putting on a charming smile, “and I was so fascinated by the song and the songwriting that I… “I fell in love with Paul McCartney.” Carpenter jokes that as a child she was convinced that McCartney was her husband.
“When I grew up, I fell in love with his songwriting,” says the singer, while Colbert interrupts her: “When you grew up, you met him!” The talk show host places a photograph on the table, clearly visible for Carpenter and the audience. You can see it: Sabrina Carpenter and Paul McCartney posing arm in arm. Colbert explores what it was like for her to meet her idol.
A meeting like from “Stranger Things”
“I actually had tears in my eyes. But then he was so normal, casual and so charming that I felt like I was entering another universe like ‘The Upside Down’, the shadowy world on ‘Stranger Things’. But much happier than ‘Stranger Things,'” says Carpenter. The host interjects “much happier than Stranger Things.” “One thing I can say about him is that in every room he walks into, he makes everyone feel seen and heard. It was a wonderful experience for me to see that from someone I admire so much. “I’m obsessed with him!” said Carpenter, giggling.
