SC Paderborn has extended the contract with Markus Schubert, but has left the situation in goal open for next season for the time being. The 27-year-old was number two last season behind loanee Dennis Seimen, who will return to VfB Stuttgart. It is still unclear who will be his successor.

Schubert has been playing in Paderborn since 2024 and was temporarily placed during his first season. After initially pushing Pelle Boevink out of the gate and making 14 appearances, he lost his regular place in the second half of the season to Manuel Riemann. After his departure, Seimen was brought in as the new number one, Schubert was only used in two DFB Cup games.

Florian Hellstern (VfB Stuttgart) and Ron-Thorben Hoffmann (Eintracht Braunschweig) are considered possible Seimen successors. Paderborn left it open what role Schubert will play after promotion to the Bundesliga. “Markus is an excellent and experienced goalkeeper who has proven his qualities over many years. He has shown on and off the pitch how important he is for our sports club. Markus lives the Paderborn way. That’s why we are very happy that he is staying,” said managing director Sebastian Lange.
