Pandemic may end on omicron

Tira Grove Krause, CTO of the Danish Public Health Authority (SSI), said that the omicron strain pandemic coronavirus COVID-19 may end. This conclusion was made taking into account the characteristics of the strain.

The fact is that the disease caused by the “omicron” flows easierthan provoked by other strains, for example “delta”. The risk of hospitalization for infection with omicron is two times lower, Danish doctors say. In December, out of 20 infected, only one patient needed intensive care. At the same time, the omicron is much more infectious, and it is able to “crack” the vaccine protection.

The new strain was named omicron on November 26, 2021. The WHO has declared the variant of the virus “of concern” because the omicron has a number of mutations that could affect its infectivity and the severity of the disease it causes.

SARS-CoV-2 mutates more slowly than other viruses, such as the flu virus. It is very difficult to predict how the new varieties will behave, so vaccination and compliance with sanitary standards remain the best protection.
