Hilarious fairy tale ends in an unimaginable nightmare

The monologue published in 2018 Girls & Boys by the acclaimed British playwright Dennis Kelly can now be seen for the first time in the Netherlands. This solo performance by Toneelgroep Oostpool is perfect for actress Hadewych Minis. What starts as a comic fairytale, ends as a complete nightmare.

An unexpected meeting at an airport leads to an intense and passionate love affair. Soon the young woman (Hadewych Minis) and her great love begin to settle down. They buy a house, get married, have two children and make a career. The life they have built together is happy and similar to that of many, but along the way the fairy tale crumbles and their lives take a disturbing turn.

Director Daria Bukvic makes Kelly’s theatrical cry for help about male violence debut in Dutch theatres. Girls & Boys is a confrontational monologue with a clear message: love each other.

Songs that transport you to another place

Zorita is the band around the songs of the Belgian/Spanish frontman Carlos Zorita Diaz. The music is based on stories, poems and thoughts. A bit like the songs of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds; they transport you to another place. 2022 is the year that their critically acclaimed debut album Amor Y Muerte celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Their performance on Friday at d’Rentmeester in Valthermond is therefore dominated by this anniversary. With Amsterdam as their base, Zorita mixes their music with sounds from all over the world to create catchy pop music. The songs are reminiscent of the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the lake at your grandmother’s house, the Baltic Sea and many other places that capture the imagination.
