Marienfelde: for many the first address in the West
Berlin’s history is closely linked to the districts of Schöneberg and Tempelhof. Every refugee from the former GDR was initially housed in the Marienfelde emergency camp. Today the house is the first address for emigrants from Eastern Europe. The western part of the city was governed from Schöneberg Town Hall for 44 years. And from the balcony on the second floor, on June 26, 1963, John F. Kennedy spoke the legendary words “Ich bin ein Berliner”. Five months later, the square in front of City Hall was named after the US President. One of the city’s most famous children was also born here: Marlene Dietrich. On December 27, 1901, she saw the light of day in Schöneberg’s Leberstraße. A commemorative plaque and the “Blauer Engel” restaurant still commemorate the cinema star. After her death in 1992 she was buried in Friedenau.
