Musea Brugge designated as new cultural heritage institution

In December 2021, the Flemish Government took the decision to select Musea Brugge as one of the candidates. An international designation committee, chaired by Art History professor Barbara Baert, assessed the applicants’ application files. She advised to designate Musea Brugge as a cultural heritage institution. She also praised the museum collection, the international image and the collection and public policy.

Yesterday, the Flemish Government decided to designate Musea Brugge as a cultural heritage institution. Today, Minister of Culture Jan Jambon presented the designation certificate to the management of Musea Brugge, during a press event in the Arentshuis, one of the 13 locations of Musea Brugge.

“Incredible Honor”

“It is an incredible honor for Bruges and shows how important the Bruges museums are for Bruges, but also for Flanders and even the world. With a world-renowned collection, phenomenal historic buildings and a visitor number of – in a non-corona year – almost 900,000 people from all over the world, our museums are there, says Mayor Dirk De fauw.

Bruges Alderman for Culture Nico Blontrock agrees: “We are very pleased that we have been able to convince the international committee of the strong story that we are writing with Musea Brugge. A story based on a very large and rich cultural legacy.”

Third museum in the list

Previously, M HKA and KMSKA were automatically designated as cultural heritage institutions according to the implementation decree accompanying the Cultural Heritage Decree of 2017. Now Musea Brugge is the third museum to join this list.
