For some time, Marc Marquez has had to deal with new opponents. In the mind of the eight-time world champion, we must not only think about how to beat rivals for the MotoGP title, but also to overcome doubts and fears born after three terrible years. From the fracture of his right humerus in 2020 in Jerez to the reappearance of diplopia, up to the fourth operation on his arm a few weeks ago: an ordeal that, by admission of the 29-year-old Spaniard, would have prompted him to consider retiring. An indiscretion revealed during an interview with the GP Racing portal.

Marquez doesn’t mince words, frank and decisive as he usually is on the track: “There were moments when I thought about quitting, even if it was never a definitive decision. Let’s say it was a parenthesis. I thought about it in 2021, when I had difficulty returning in the spring, and also this year after that accident in Mandalika that awakened my vision problem … “. Devastating blows for the body as well as for the mind, which in any case did not bring Marc down: “I realized that, if I had done it, I would never have been considered as strong as before. The motivation is still there. I know it is difficult, but I keep going. We have to be realistic about what we can achieve ”.

It is therefore difficult to expect a Marquez similar to the one who won and established records between 2013 and 2019, such as the records of victories and points in a single season. The approach of the Honda Spaniard is slightly different: “Until 2019 what kept me alive was the desire to win. Despite the falls and injuries, aiming for victory motivated me. Now it’s a bit different because I have to face the challenge of still being fast ”. Marc continues: “The motivation is this: to find solutions to fight for the podium and the victory, trying to win another title. Because I feel in my heart that this goal is achievable ”.

The first step remains to soften the character of an unstable Honda, which adds to other technical difficulties: “I have to work on driving, since the arm is not the same as before. So you need to use your legs more to control the bike, thus avoiding a new head injury and possible vision problems… But I can’t think about it while I’m in the saddle, otherwise I wouldn’t have to ride anymore ”. It is therefore impossible to think of a Marquez willing to never take risks: “When that happens, I’ll end my career. Taking risks whenever possible, I have won eight world titles. I hope to leave the image of a champion who gave everything for him from the first MotoGP race to the end. I don’t know if I’ll be successful, but no one can tell me that I didn’t give my best. I will also fight for a sixth place ”. A promise that Marc intends to honor to the very end.
