The man who threw a cup of beer from the audience at a linesman during the FC Groningen – NEC match on Saturday is still in custody. It concerns an 18-year-old man from Bedum in Groningen, the police report. Due to his action, the duel was permanently halted.
The police spokeswoman could not say whether a report has been filed against the man.
The game was immediately stopped definitively in the first half on Saturday at a 0-0 score, after a linesman was hit by the cup. Security guards immediately arrested the man and escorted him out of the stadium, after which the police took him away.
It is not the first time that there have been problems at FC Groningen this season. During the matches against SC Cambuur, SV Spakenburg and sc Heerenveen, supporters misbehaved.
KNVB has yet to make a decision
The KNVB does not yet know what will happen to the game. In principle, the game will be played at a later time, as much as possible under the same conditions as Saturday evening. However, the professional football league board can also decide that the match must be replayed in its entirety.
If there is a question of guilt, the club in question can be punished disciplinary. The KNVB does not want a team or club to benefit from the permanent suspension of a match.
Last week, the duel between NAC and Willem II in the Kitchen Champion Division was the first match to be definitively discontinued after the stricter measures taken by the KNVB. The last fifteen minutes of that game will be played without an audience on Tuesday. Willem II starts with a 0-1 lead.
