The Munich team fired their first warning shot early on, but the ball landed on the post. Then Mainz turned up the heat and took over the game.
FC Bayern suffered their first defeat of the current Bundesliga season on Saturday afternoon. Vincent Kompany’s team lost 1:2 (0:1) against 1. FSV Mainz 05 after 90 minutes. The German record champions remain leaders on matchday 14, but the gap to Bayer Leverkusen is now only four points.
Jae-sung Lee punished Bayern shortly before half-time (41st minute). After the restart, the South Korean increased Mainz’s lead to 2-0 (60′). Leroy Sané gave his team hope again shortly before the end (87th), but his goal remained the only goal from Bayern’s perspective.
The Munich coach not only reacted to the failures, but also brought Eric Dier into central defense for the first time since the cup game in the same place at the end of October. “The team has to be dominant and try to score goals,” demanded Kompany before kick-off at Sky.
The guests initially had the usual majority of possession – but as coach Bo Henriksen demanded, the Mainz team appeared brave and defended well. Michael Olise (6th) put the first exclamation mark with his shot against the post, shortly afterwards the Frenchman headed just over the goal (12th). But as a result, the Munich offensive faltered enormously.
The Mainz team had to cope with bad news: After winning the ball, captain Jonathan Burkardt suddenly ran towards the goal alone, and Kim disturbed the striker at the last moment (13th). Burkardt was injured and Armindo Sieb came on for him.
But the hosts were unimpressed. Even magic foot Jamal Musiala couldn’t hurt the robust opponent. When it was 1-0, Sieb’s cross was deflected and Lee tricked the ricochet past Daniel Peretz to take the lead. Bayern’s Min-jae Kim in particular looked bad with his unsuccessful header extension. After the break, the Munich team rebelled, but remained largely harmless.
Instead, Lee took advantage of the renewed disarray in the middle and scored after a deflection from a few meters to make it 2-0. Sané, who had been weak for a long time, made it 1-2 after a blocked shot from Joshua Kimmich. Bayern were no longer able to score an equalizer.
