Slipped to 9th place
After three league defeats in a row and elimination in the Champions League against FC Bayern, Lazio Rome coach Maurizio Sarri has resigned from his position, according to consistent reports from Italy. An official confirmation from the club was still pending on Tuesday afternoon. The 65-year-old, whose working paper would have been valid until 2025, is leaving the Serie A club after almost three years and 137 games with an average points average of 1.67 points.
It is said that the coach informed the club management of his decision in the morning. The reigning runner-up Lazio had slipped to ninth place in the championship (table). Sarri had recently shown himself to be anything but satisfied with the breadth and depth of his squad and publicly criticized it. The Italian said that the team was by no means sufficiently strong to play in four competitions. Lazio spent significantly less money on transfers during the former Chelsea and Juventus coach’s tenure than in previous years (statistics). Sarri made it clear that this had not always been in his interest – especially since he felt his wishes were not sufficiently heard by the club management. “When I asked about player A, they let me choose between C and D,” said the coach, who added: “It wasn’t me who decided on the transfer market.” Now it’s time for “everyone to have their own “Takes responsibility,” said the coach just a few weeks ago.
