It works out well. Huiberts receives a lot of praise. At AZ’s last home match, supporters sing to the outgoing director and a large banner is displayed.
Mayor Anja Schouten appoints him an honorary citizen of Alkmaar. There are also warm words in the documentary from former players Vangelis Pavlidis and Bruno Martins Indi.
AZ celebrities Hugo Hovenkamp and Henk van Rijnsoever say they will miss Huiberts: “He was and is one of us. Max has always remained himself.”
KNVB Cup
During his period as director of football affairs, AZ won one prize: the KNVB Cup. In the canceled corona season, AZ shares the leading position in the Premier League with Ajax. The club is doing very well financially and reaches European football almost every year.
Crucial decisions that Huiberts makes during his period as director are the trainers who are fired. Arne Slot, Pascal Jansen and recently Maarten Martens left in the meantime. The AZ documentary is not about those difficult decisions.
