FC Hansa Rostock got back on the road to success with a 2-1 (1-1) win over VfL Osnabrück. The Lower Saxony, on the other hand, are still without a win after four matchdays.
When the final whistle sounded at 2:57 p.m., loud cheers broke out in the Ostseestadion. Fourth game of the season, third win – Hansa Rostock started the season much better than many observers had expected. “Front runner, front runner!” shouts echoed through the arena.
In an interview with NDR, Hansa winning goal scorer Kai Pröger tried to classify: “That sounds good, but that’s the fourth day of the game. That’s still relatively meaningless. Nevertheless, it’s a nice feeling to have started the season well. But these are still points that we collect against relegation.”
“We have to learn from it.”
— VfL striker John Verhoek
On the other hand, promoted VfL Osnabrück finds itself in a relegation zone after the fourth game without a win in the table. “We have to swallow that, we mustn’t let ourselves be distracted now. We have to take this fight that we had with us. I don’t think that Hansa was the much better team. It’s a shame, but we have to learn from it.” said John Verhoek, the former Rostocker in the Osnabrück team.
Perea brings Hansa along energy performance in the lead
VfL trainer Tobias Schweinsteiger had put on Kwasi Okyere Wriedt as a striker in the 4-2-3-1 system. Verhoek initially had to sit on the substitutes’ bench for the guest appearance at the old place of work.
After anything but spectacular first 25 minutes, the game suddenly offered a highlight. And once again it was Juan José Perea, the faster and above all assertive Colombian in the Hansa team, who scored.
After a long shot by Dennis Dressel, the 23-year-old loan from Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart took the ball with his chest, remained stable in the sprint even under pressure from the two Osnabrück central defenders Maxwell Gyamfi and Niklas Wiemann, took off and hit the bottom right of the net – 1-0 for Mecklenburg (27th).
It was the South American’s third goal of the second division season. On the second day of the game, he shot FCH in the game at newly promoted SV Elversberg with a late brace to a 2-1 win.
Osnabrück equalizes just before the break whistle
In the home game against the purple-whites, the Baltic Sea townspeople seemed more solid after the lead than in the initial phase. Osnabrück made an effort, but didn’t really become a threat for a long time in the first half – until the third minute of added time.
VfL midfielder Dave Gnaase took a shot in the penalty area from 14 yards out and equalized – with support from the hosts – to make it 1-1. Rostock’s Janik Bachmann steered the ball into his own goal with the back of his head.
Rostock’s Pröger hits the penalty kick with a margin
After the restart, the northern duel was a very tough affair. But then referee Patrick Schwengers (Limburg) pointed to the point in the away penalty area. A review by the VAR followed, but the decision was the right one.
VfL captain Gyamfi played the ball with his hand. Pröger started. Osnabrück’s goalkeeper Lennart Grill deflected his half-shot ball to the post, but the Hansa professional scored in the follow-up shot to make it 2-1 (67th).
Schweinsteiger reacted and brought Verhoek on (69′). But even with the experienced Dutchman on the pitch, the Lower Saxony didn’t emit enough goal danger for a long time. It only got tight for Hansa in the first eight minutes of stoppage time. After preliminary work by Erik Engelhardt, Gyamfi came a step too late. Osnabrück ran, but couldn’t equalize.
