Heavy rainfall also forces the evacuation of almost 35,000 people

At least three people have died and almost 35,000 have been evacuated by the floods affecting southern Peninsular Malaysia, where the copious rains continue, the authorities reported this Friday. The most affected state is Johor, in southern Malaysia, with more than 31,850 evacuees in the 209 temporary shelters set up, according to the latest update today from the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).

So far, there have been three deaths in Johor, an elderly couple found lifeless on thursday trapped in their waterlogged home and a man who was dragged on Wednesday due to a current, the police told the public agency Bernama. The floods also affect some 3,000 people in the states of Pahang, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, on the peninsula, and to a lesser extent Sarawak, on the Malaysian part of the island of Borneo.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department expects heavy rainfall to continue between today and tomorrow in Johor; and also affect several areas of Pahang.

Malaysia has two rainy seasons: one caused by the southwest monsoon (May-September) and the other by the northeast monsoon (October-March), the most severe and generally affecting the eastern part of the peninsula and Borneo.
