The German soccer record champions FC Bayern Munich announced their fifth new signing on Tuesday: Mathys Tel has signed with the Bundesliga leaders. In return, a quite high sum of millions goes to his training club Stade Rennes from France.
FC Bayern has signed a new centre-forward in Mathys Tel, who is just 17 years old. After several rounds of negotiations with Stade Rennes, the Munich team could now report completion. Tel had landed by plane in the south of the republic on Monday morning, then he went to Säbener Straße for a medical check and signature. The exact contract period is not known.
“FC Bayern is one of the best teams in the world. I’m really looking forward to this great challenge and will give everything for this club,” Tel said in the official statement.
Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said: “We’ve been watching him for a long time and have now been able to convince him to take his next important steps with us in Munich. We’re proud of that because there were many clubs that wanted to sign him.”
FC Bayern apparently digs deep into their pockets
According to media reports, the transfer costs up to 28.5 million euros, 20 million euros are said to have been agreed as a base fee. A quite large rucksack for the U17 European champions, as the striker, who was born in northern France, can look back on just ten professional appearances.
Nevertheless, the expectations of the attacker are high. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann could hardly hide his anticipation for Mathys Tel on the sidelines of the USA tour and spoke of a “very fast and strong” player who could “become one of the best strikers”. Nagelsmann even believes that the right-footed player can “one day score 40 goals per season”.
FC Bayern pays over 140 million euros for new players
With the signing of the Frenchman, FC Bayern is also reacting to the departure of Robert Lewandowski, who had forced his move to FC Barcelona. Tel is not considered a direct Lewandowski replacement, Nagelsmann had clarified. Nevertheless, the attacker, who can be used flexibly, is planned directly for the first team.
FC Bayern had previously introduced four other newcomers: Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui came from Ajax Amsterdam, Africa’s Footballer of the Year Sadio Mané was signed by Liverpool FC. Most recently, Matthijs de Ligt was signed by Juventus Turin.
Including the Tel fee and excluding possible bonus payments, the German record champions have already spent over 140 million euros on the transfer market.
