FIFA 23 cover shows a woman for the first time

The cover for FIFA 23 has finally been revealed – and for the first time, it also features a female soccer player!

Traditionally, EA unveils the new cover of the next FIFA game in the summer. There is a surprise for the 2023 edition. In addition to Kylian Mbappé, striker Samantha “Sam” Kerr can also be seen.

While Mbappé has been featured on the cover for the third year in a row, it’s Kerr’s first. She is also the first woman ever to receive the prominent place from FIFA. There was already a cover version with Chrisine Sinclair, Alex Morgan and Stephanie Catley in 2016, but only in the USA.

Australia’s Kerr is currently a striker at Chelsea FC. With the London club, she became champion in 2019/20 in the season that was canceled due to Corona. In the 2020/21 Champions League final, the strong team then lost to FC Barcelona in the final. Kerr is also Australia’s all-time all-time all-time leading scorer with 54 goals as of July 2022.

In addition to the joint cover of Kerr and Mbappé on the FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition, there are also individual covers for the two exceptional athletes.

There have been plans to give women’s football a platform in Football Manager since 2021. Although no separate version is planned, the women’s league teams are to be integrated into the existing version.

The basis for the corresponding databases and animations has so far been missing. The costs for this project are correspondingly high. Director Miles Jacobson says: “We believe in equality for all and want to be part of the solution. We want to be part of the process of equality between women’s and men’s football.”

In FIFA 22, 17 women’s national teams were already represented. With Sam Kerr on the cover, developer EA is aiming to integrate more teams.

FIFA 23 cover makes an important mark

TECHBOOK means

“In my opinion, the new cover sets a long-overdue mark. Women’s football has been becoming more and more important for years, and the players are becoming more visible. The format of the double cover also has a symbolic effect in this context. Of course, it’s a bit of a shame that Sam Kerr’s single cover is only available in Australia and New Zealand.” – Marlene Polywka, editor
