After a cup of beer was thrown and the assistant referee was hit, the referee decided to abandon the match. This decision was taken in accordance with the recently tightened measures of the KNVB, which are aimed at ensuring safety on the field.
According to these measures, the match will be permanently stopped immediately if a player or (assistant) referee is hit by an object from the audience. The starting point of the KNVB was always that the match is played out, because this is in keeping with a fair course of the competition and matches should be decided on the field as much as possible.
The KNVB also announced on Sunday that the independent prosecutor of professional football has launched an investigation into the incident at FC Groningen – NEC. The 18-year-old man who threw the cup of beer, is still stuck.
