On May 9th “Sky” reported for the first time on FC Bayern’s interest in Sadio Mané, on June 22nd the record champions made the long-awaited signing of the star attacker from Liverpool official. For the 30-year-old Senegalese there had been at least one other top-class option in the meantime – in addition to a move to the Bundesliga – with Paris Saint-Germain. This was revealed by Mané’s PR consultant Bacary Cissé on Sunday evening in the program “After Foot” on the French broadcaster “RMC”.

“Yes, PSG were actually targeting Sadio. Leonardo (head of sport; editor’s note) had several contacts with his German advisor (Björn Bezemer from the “Roof” agency), they saw each other and discussed the background to a possible transfer from Sadio to PSG, but that was it. Everyone knows Leonardo was ejected, so you had to wait,” explained Cissé. Leonardo’s end in Paris, like the dismissal of the previous head coach Mauricio Pochettino, is a done deal.

Mané joined FC Bayern for a fixed 32 million euros, up to 9 million euros in bonuses can be added by the end of the contract in 2025. In the course of the transfer poker, the Munich team is said to have reduced the Reds’ transfer fee from originally just under 50 million euros. At Säbener Straße, the 90-time national player has risen to become one of the top earners, which also underpins Cissé’s statements.

“Bayern is a club that needs no introduction, they have presented an attractive sporting project that nobody can refuse,” said the consultant. “After six years at Liverpool it’s more tempting to go to Bayern as you’re up for a new sporting challenge. He won everything with Liverpool, every day he woke up and saw the same faces. (…) And financially everything is relative, but today Sadio is one of the top earners in the Bundesliga.”

He vehemently denied that Mané left the Reds for financial reasons because his salary was too low. “Those are false rumours. We didn’t want to talk about it. A player of Sadio’s caliber can’t make the salary people are talking about. The figures that are circulating are completely wrong. Sadio was already earning more than that when he joined Liverpool from Southampton. He renewed his contract in 2018 and his salary was much higher than the figures circulating in the media,” Cissé explained (quoted via “mirror”) previously on TV5Monde. At the broadcaster, he spoke of “many other big clubs” who had also advertised for the offensive man.

Various figures have been circulating on Mané’s salary at Liverpool, starting at £5.2m (€6m) a year. The veteran, who received shirt number 17 in Munich, cashed in at FCB, among other things, according to the “Picture” over 20 million euros, which would put him on a par with Manuel Neuer (36) and Thomas Müller (32). According to the newspaper, only goalkeeper Robert Lewandowski (33), who is willing to change, earns more with 24 million euros a year.
