According to his father and advisor, young star Florian Wirtz will stay with Bayer Leverkusen at least until 2024.
“Of course every young player wants to play with the best, but Florian is in good hands with Bayer until the 2024 European Championship. He can still learn a lot of things in Leverkusen that he can’t learn from a hodgepodge of established stars,” said Hans Joachim Wirtz to the “kicker” on Friday (06.01.23).
This should also apply in the event that the Bundesliga twelfth, who started the season poorly, misses the qualification for an international competition. Wirtz, who has recovered from a cruciate ligament rupture and is contractually bound to Leverkusen until 2027, is about to make his comeback after a nine-month forced break. He has yet to play a competitive game for Bayer this season.
Alonso: “Flo a great winter signing”
The return of the 19-year-old stokes both in Leverkusen and in the German Soccer-Bund (DFB) Hope for better times. Two brief appearances by the midfielder in friendlies for his club before the Christmas break made Bayer coach Xabi Alonso enthusiastic: “We’re a better team with Flo – and I’m a better coach with him too. He’ll be a great winter signing for us.”
Wirtz still has a contract in Leverkusen until 2027. For national coach Hansi Flick, Wirtz is one of the possible key figures in building a more powerful national team.
