European Parliament: “Make 2024 the year of cycling” | Abroad

In the resolution, MEPs urge the Commission and Member States to support the production of bicycles and bicycle parts in Europe. They also encourage Member States to reduce VAT on the production, rental and repair of bicycles and electric bicycles.

The non-binding resolution calls on governments and local authorities to invest more in the construction of cycling infrastructure. The lack of separate cycle paths and secure car parks are pointed out as obstacles to getting even more people to cycle. What would also help, according to the MPs, is an increase in the number of places for bicycles on the train.

The ecosystem of the European bicycle industry represents more than 1,000 SMEs and employs one million people. According to parliament, the number of jobs in the sector could double by 2030.
