Confusion about statements by Salihamidzic and Lewandowski

The top scorer of the German record champions announces that he wants to leave the club. The sports director of FC Bayern also expresses itself – but both contradict each other on one important point.

It was the bang on the last day of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season: Robert Lewandowski actually wants to leave FC Bayern and has decided not to extend his contract, which expires in June 2023. This was announced by Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic before the game at VfL Wolfsburg (2-2) and by the striker himself after the game.

However, there is one point in the statements from both sides that causes confusion: Was there an offer from the German record champions to Lewandowski at all?

“I spoke to Lewa,” said Salihamidzic on “Sky”. And further: “During the conversation he informed me that he did not want to accept our offer to extend the contract and that he would like to leave the club.”

Lewandowski himself, however, denied that there was any offer from the club at all: “We have to find the best solution for me and for the club. I didn’t get an offer,” said the 33-year-old after the game on “Sky”.

The top scorer himself seems to want to push his farewell this summer: “It’s quite possible that this was my last game for Bayern. I can’t say 100 percent, but it could be,” said Lewandowski after the Wolfsburg Game on Polish TV (read more here). Public disagreements between the two sides are not conducive to the possibility that both sides will still agree.
