China is hoping for a ‘pragmatic’ economic policy from Germany

The Chinese government is hoping for a “pragmatic and rational” German economic policy towards China. Germany should put “positive energy” into mutually beneficial cooperation with China, “instead of lifting a stone just to let it fall on your own foot,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told the press in Beijing on Friday.

The spokeswoman responded to questions about media reports that the federal government wanted to reduce economic dependence on China and to review support for German companies. It is also being considered to stop state investment and export guarantees for companies operating in China. Mao Ming called such measures “pretty absurd”.

The federal government also wants to enforce a level playing field and more reciprocity in China business. The Group of the Seven Big Industrial Nations (G7) is to discuss whether to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the restrictions in China, it has been reported.

The spokeswoman said: “China always abides by WTO rules.” If there is a lawsuit, China will defend its rights and interests within the framework of the WTO.
