Busy without major incidents: this is how King’s Day went

King’s Day attracted a large number of visitors to Amsterdam yesterday and it became too busy in the city center at the end of the afternoon. Still, the atmosphere was good.

At around 10 p.m. last night, the police were aware of ‘no significant incidents’. That was also the moment when the outflow was in full swing. Some people have been arrested, such as four pickpockets, but the police do not mention any concrete numbers.

Revelers gathered along the canals to look at the many sloops.

On the Ceintuurbaan, near the Sarphatipark, King’s Day celebrations were startled around 1 p.m. by a large house fire. No one was injured, but the street was evacuated and the house has become uninhabitable.

Around 4 p.m., the municipality announced that it was too busy in the Jordaan and that King’s Day could be better celebrated elsewhere. Three quarters of an hour later, that advice applied to the entire city center.

It continued with those calls. Around 10 p.m., a large part of the King’s Day public left the city via Central Station. There were also two vans of the Marechaussee, which assisted the riot police.

At that time there were still tens of thousands of Metallica fans in the Johan Cruijff Arena. On King’s Day, there were several people with shirts from the hard rock band scattered throughout the city. Some walked on the Arenaboulevard in the morning, others took the metro into the city center during the day.
