Bundesliga: Werder Bremen ends FC Augsburg’s series

Werder Bremen has stopped the negative trend that had been going on for weeks and scored a breakthrough in the fight to stay in the league. On the 14th matchday of the Bundesliga, Bremen achieved a 2-0 (1-0) win against FC Augsburg, their first win since the end of October.

Niklas Stark took the lead after a corner from Marvin Ducksch, which was a bit flattering at the time (39′). In the second half, Werder was more aggressive and determined and consequently made it 2-0, this time Ducksch himself scored with a header (65′).

Werder is increasing the gap downwards

With 14 points, Werder increased their lead over the relegation places, while FCA suffered their first defeat in the seventh game under coach Jess Thorup.

On the Weser the air in front of the game had become thinner. Given the difficult end-of-year spurt with games in Mönchengladbach and against Leipzig, the home team was in debt after poor results.

And coach Werner’s team, which played without captain Marco Friedl, who was out at short notice with adductor problems, gained some initial encouragement. Jens Stage finished centrally on the edge of the penalty area, but Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen dived quickly enough (9th). The away team then gained more and more control and set their first exclamation mark with a volley from Niklas Dorsch (23′).

Tietz misses the empty goal

Then FCA should have taken the lead. Phillip Tietz received an invitation from Werder keeper Michael Zetterer, who hit the ball quite easily. But the Augsburg offensive man missed the big chance (28th) – and Thorup was visibly annoyed in front of the Augsburg bench.

The Dane’s mood didn’t improve. Bremen worked out a series of corners that ultimately gave them the lead. Stark, who was back in Werder’s starting line-up for the first time since matchday five, extended the cross into the goal.

The hosts’ increased self-confidence was noticeable at the beginning of the second half, Romano Schmid missed an opportunity to score a second goal (57th) before Ducksch increased. Werder caught Augsburg, who were preparing a substitution, completely out of order. After that, the guests didn’t get back into the game.

Werder in Gladbach, Augsburg welcomes Dortmund

The Bremen team will be in action at the start of the next matchday against Borussia Mönchengladbach (Friday, December 15, 2023 at 8:30 p.m.). A day later, Augsburg faces the guests from Dortmund (3:30 p.m.).
