Boris Becker as a coach? Alexander Zverev makes you sit up and take notice

Germany’s best tennis player Alexander Zverev has had many a coach at his side throughout his career. According to the 27-year-old, it would be conceivable that Boris Becker would work at his side in the future – but only under one condition.

Alexander Zverev opens the door wide open for Boris Becker to work together. “I love Boris and I also believe that he has an incredible knowledge of tennis,” said the Hamburg resident in an interview with “tennis MAGAZIN”. Becker was also fundamentally positive about coaching in the spring; he didn’t want to “rule anything out” for 2025 or 2026, the tennis icon said at the time.

However, there is still a “question mark” behind the Zverev-Becker combination, the Tokyo Olympic champion now added: “But I don’t know how he travels.”

As soon as Becker has “solved and clarified this, we can talk about it,” Zverev promised. “We are always in touch with him and talk to each other often.”

Zverev: “Just one person” really helped

It is clear for the world number two that he will prepare for the first Grand Slam in 2025 in the current constellation. Ostensibly, Zverev is coached by his father Alexander senior, although there have been repeated attempts to bring in external coaches in recent years. “Now for Australia it will stay as it is and then I will see,” announced Zverev.

At the same time, he made it clear that “the right person” must be available: “I’m not going to just take anyone just because I or others think it’s right. I’ve done it, I’ve tried to work with many. But I found “That only one person really, really helped me.”

Zverev explained: “David Ferrer really helped me. The collaboration with everyone else wasn’t a real success.” Ferrer joined the coaching team in July 2020. Shortly afterwards, Zverev reached the final of the US Open, which he lost to Dominic Thiem after five sets. After only six months, the paths diverged again.
