Sacha Ausems, the mayor of Waalwijk, will conduct the first exploratory talks for a new coalition for the Provincial Council. Last week the BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) won the elections. The party is the first to form a new coalition.
Ausems is non-party and will hold talks with the new parties in the Provincial Council in the coming weeks. She will look at which points are and which are not negotiable in a new coalition.
Nitrogen plans under discussion
That will be a tough job for the scout. Earlier, BBB group chairman John Frenken announced that the deadline for barn adjustments will become a point of discussion. The deadline is now July 1, 2024, but BBB wants it postponed.
According to Frenken, it is unwise to have farmers adjust their stables in this period, in order to reduce nitrogen production in the province. “That deadline is putting the knife to people’s throats, which is completely unnecessary.” There is therefore no room for negotiation on this point, says the party chairman.
In addition, BBB considers another point important in the exploratory talks: the party hopes that it will become clear which parties are willing to have the coalition agreement assessed in two years’ time. “In recent years, we have learned that developments and challenges are following up at an ever-increasing pace.”
Honored with her role
BBB finds Sacha Ausems the right person for these negotiations. “We want to conduct the discussions in an open process. It is precisely Ausems’ neutral position and her management experience that make her suitable for this role,” says Frenken.
In any case, the mayor of Waalwijk is honored with a role as the first scout. She says: “Connection is an important theme for me, too many people do not feel heard. I made the transition to public administration from that involvement. Wise administration starts with listening and wanting to understand well. That is why I am particularly motivated to to have these conversations.”
BBB became the largest in all provinces in the election on Wednesday. According to faction chairman Frenken, this is due to the dissatisfaction with the cabinet, he said on election night.
