Note: The following part of this article appeared on Transfermarkt back on August 12, when the nominees were announced.
On Monday evening from 8:30 p.m. in Paris, the prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy will be presented for the 66th time. The Bundesliga professionals Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig), Sébastien Haller (BVB) and Joshua Kimmich are also on the shortlist of the magazine “France Football”, which presents the award for the world’s best footballer, goalkeeper and young professional together with FIFA and Sadio Mané (both Bayern Munich). Lionel Messi (PSG), who won the Ballon d’Or for the seventh time last year, is absent for the first time since 2005.
Among the goalkeepers who are honored with the “Trophée Yachine”, in addition to Munich’s Manuel Neuer, Frankfurt’s Europa League winner Kevin Trapp also made it into the top ten and can raise hopes. In the youth category, the “Trophée Kopa”, six more were in the ranking: Karim Adeyemi and Jude Bellingham (both BVB), Ryan Gravenberch and Jamal Musiala (both FC Bayern) as well as Josko Gvardiol (RB Leipzig) and Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen). Germany active professionals nominated.

The winners of the Ballon d’Or, which has been awarded since 1956, are chosen by international specialist journalists. Between 2010 and 2015, the election took place under the umbrella of the world governing body FIFA, as a substitute for the election for World Player of the Year. “France Football” has been awarding the Golden Ball itself since 2016. There will be one change in the future: Instead of evaluating the performance of footballers per calendar year, as before, the performance of the season should be taken into account. In future, only representatives of the top 100 in the FIFA ranking list will be entitled to vote. In addition, the overall career should no longer be a criterion.
