The Game Awards is the biggest night of the year for video games, with several hours of announcements, trailers and awards. At The Game Awards 2024, the exclusive PlayStation 5 platform of the Japanese Team Asobi, 65 souls (despite, it must be said, Sony’s munificent ownership behind it) and a French game director, Astro Bot won four awards. Among these, of course, the coveted Game of the Year award stands out, along with some of the most important statuettes.

Balatro and Metaphor: ReFantazio were also among the big winners, picking up three awards each. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (second time for the moving protagonist Melina Juergens, after the success in 2017), Helldivers 2 and Black Myth: Wukong instead received two awards for their efforts this year.

Astro Bot is the GOTY 2024 —

Astro Bot also won in class, when director Nicolas Doucet cited, among many thanks in his award acceptance speech, Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. for the fundamental role they had in defining what a platformer should always be. Doucet had a moment of hesitation, perhaps because he was undecided whether to mention a direct competitor, but after exchanging a look with his collaborators on stage he was convinced. For a moment of great fair play and gratitude towards a company that has probably trained the vast majority of workers in the sector.
